About The Last Jedi Script… UPDATE!

The Last Jedi script was made available at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library and podcaster Who Talks First made the trip and managed to get some of the exact lines from the script.

The Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For

Rey, finally speaking her greatest fear. Something she had hoped against hope was not true. But finally, she says it.

REY: They were nobody.

The script says she spoke her greatest fear, not what she “knows.” Of course, the one thing Star Wars teaches us is that we should give into our fear, right? Oh…

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” – Yoda

UPDATE:

Recently, Script-to-Screen shared a specific shot-for-shot scrolling script comparison of this scene and dialogue. This version of the script further supports our conclusions above from the transcript of The Last Jedi script made publicly available at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library. Here’s a screen-grab regarding the moment in question:

In the image above, we see the dialogue of Kylo Ren telling Rey that her parents “…were filthy junk traders that sold you off for drinking money. They’re dead in a paupers grave in the Jakku desert.”

Note again, The Last Jedi script itself does little to indicate any truth is to be found:

Rey believes him, she fights her emotions back.

We now have two direct instances from The Last Jedi script specifically questioning the validity of Kylo Ren’s claim: 1) that Rey is admitting her worst fear, not necessarily any truth, and 2) that Rey “believes” Kylo Ren, and not necessarily that any self-realization of a buried truth was uncovered. These two specific instances provide strong evidence for a delayed parental reveal and origin-story for Rey in Episode IX.

What Luke Really Saw

Just the briefest thought. But then his eyes go from his saber to his sleeping nephew, and they change. The hate vanishes. But Kylo is awake. Eyes wide with fear, seeing the saber in Luke’s hand. He knows what Luke saw, he knows what Luke considered.

Just what did Luke see? Was it really what Ben planned to do or was it something he had already done..? Ben thinks he knows exactly what his uncle saw, and reacts based on that assumption but we the audience are still left unclear.

Hmm…

Making The Connection

LUKE: The war is just beginning.

Cut back to Rey. She see’s Luke’s face, they connect, seeing each other.

From our Round Table:

And for those wondering if Finn had anything to do with the kiss:

As the shield door explodes, she kisses him, quick and stolen, and he is taken off guard.
