Rey’s Parents: The Director’s Cut

Much has been made about the validity (or lack thereof) regarding Rey’s familial “reveal” in The Last Jedi. Recently, we discussed the transcription of The Last Jedi script, made available at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, which indicates Rey is speaking her greatest fear, not necessarily the truth:

Rey, finally speaking her greatest fear. Something she had hoped against hope was not true. But finally, she says it.

REY: They were nobody.

Despite its ambiguity, several continue to argue that this interpretation is merely semantics, and that Rey is without a doubt a random selection of the Force. Please do note however, that the script depiction above sits firmly on top of a cleanly worded, speculation-inviting, unambiguous statement regarding Rey’s parents and the “reveal” from the Director himself, Rian Johnson, shortly after his film debuted:

“Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it.” – Rian Johnson

Cut! That’s a wrap.

No first, no second. Han shot - end of statement.
