Fear is the Past to the Dark Side: Skywalker Family Allegories in The Last Jedi

– by HanSpinel

Many have used the visual parallels between Rey and Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi as suggestion to a romantic connection. However, I suggest a more thematic and resonating connection of family and fear of the past is being presented, particularly when including Luke Skywalker’s perspective….

If there’s one thing we’re known for sure here at the Star Wars Shadow Council, it’s reasonable and conservative predictions about Episode IX that more or less square with what the rest of the fandom thinks will happen. But today, we’ve decided to break with tradition. Read on to find out what brilliant, iconoclastic ideas we’ve been cooking up in the Shadow Council think tank…

Below is a video character study on Kylo Ren, and what redemptive narrative, if any, remains for his arc within the Sequel Trilogy. Full article essay here.

Saving Ben Solo: No One’s Ever Really Gone

written by HanSpinel, and speaking for myself only

From the first statement of The Force Awakens’ opening crawl, the Sequel Trilogy introduces us to a Skywalker family in peril:

“Luke Skywalker has vanished.”

We quickly learn also that Han and Leia have been split apart for some time. The catalyst to it all? The Fall of Ben Solo, and his rise in darkness as the Master of the Knights of Ren.

Many fans are quite literally “Torn Apart” regarding Ben Solo’s ultimate fate in the Sequel Trilogy, this very council included. Can Ben Solo be redeemed? I argue in this article that this is the wrong question to ask because it places emphasis on audience perception and opinion to define Kylo Ren’s evil deeds vs. any redeeming qualities – this discussion often goes in circles. Here, arguments about Kylo/Ben’s visual portrayal (e.g., puppy dog eyes) will be few and far between (though I’ve included an accompanying video character study here). Indeed, if we are to save Ben Solo or find any hope in the Sequel Trilogy for the light left in Ben (and yes “there is still light in him, I know it”), focus must instead be placed entirely on the intentional direction and writing for the sacrifices of, undying love from, and perceptions of the most trusted characters in the galaxy: Han, Luke, Leia, and also, the continuing theme of healing that Rey brings to the shattered Skywalker Legacy….

Kylo Ren’s Fate in Episode IX

Image result for kylo ren

Written by robotical712, speaking for myself only.

Kylo Ren is perhaps the franchise’s most divisive character. Some see him as a victim of his identity and the circumstances of his childhood. For those who see him that way, he’s a misguided and a lonely individual who is only missing love and understanding. To others he’s megalomaniacal monster who has refused every chance at redemption and must be put down. Unsurprisingly, speculation and opinions over what his fate will be in IX also vary the most of all of the characters. From an unrepentant death to atonement and forgiveness, little can stoke emotions like the debate over where his character is headed.

V-day or D-day: What will Episode IX mean for ReyLo?

– Guest Post by kelC3PO

There may be something in the air when it comes to Rey and Kylo Ren… but is it romance, or family ties?

In this post, I draw comparisons between the Luke/Leia and ReyLo “relationships.” A majority of the post focuses on highlighting fan opinions from the late 70’s and early 80’s that are in favor of a Luke/Leia love. I then hypothesize that any ReyLo relationship will end the same way as Luke/Leia… with Rey and Kylo Ren as relatives. A population of fans were upset with this reveal after RotJ, and I suspect ReyLo fans will react similarly should ReySky be revealed in Episode IX.

Hope you like it!
